The future of AI-assisted TPA operations.
AI will change how TPA teams read, sort and explain their work. It should not change who decides. A practical line between the two, and the controls to insist on.
Where AI can genuinely help a TPA
The useful work for AI in TPA operations is the reading and sorting that people do around the calculations: explaining why a payroll file failed validation, spotting a census row that looks unlike the rest, summarizing a long exception history, extracting fields from a sponsor’s document, and drafting a plain-English note for a client. All of it saves time without deciding anything.
Where AI must not decide
402(g), 415(c), ADP/ACP, eligibility and vesting are rules with fixed inputs. They should run as deterministic, tested code that gives the same answer every time. AI should never post to a ledger, approve a distribution, sign off a test or make a legal or compliance determination. A named person approves, and the approval is recorded.
The controls to insist on
- Read-only access for AI components; no path to change balances or test results.
- Every AI suggestion labeled as AI and inert until a named user accepts it.
- Prompts and outputs written to the audit log; a firm-level switch to turn AI off.
- Participant data kept inside the firm’s environment; no training on customer data.
- Risk assessment against a framework such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
Where KinetiPlan stands
AI features in KinetiPlan are planned, not live. The pilot build’s assistant opens a preview panel only and calls no AI service. The design rules above are published on the AI guardrails section, and they apply before any AI feature ships.

Common questions
Is AI live in KinetiPlan?
No. AI features are planned. The pilot build's assistant is a preview panel that calls no AI service.
Can AI run nondiscrimination testing?
It should not. Testing should run as deterministic code with an analyst signing off. AI can at most draft a plain-English summary of the results.
